Yes . . . there are still small towns in Central Contra Costa County, and the Town of Clayton is the best of them. You still get the small town feeling when you walk about its 6 square block town center, and you can easily imagine imagine the cowhands riding through town, in from the ranch to get the mail, supplies, or a quick beer. The town dates back to 1857 when Joel Clayton laid out its streets. In the early days most of the residents were ranchers, although many came to the town because of the nearby coal mines. The U.S.Post Ooffice opened in 1861and until recently operated our of a really great old building. Today it operates from a nice, new building in the center of town. There is still one long time pub with roots going way back in time when this area was mostly ranches, but there is also a newer sports bar and grill that is very popular, especially on weekends. Clayton is the home of the famous Skipolinis Pizza Parlor, and there are also some newer, very good resturants in town.
Most of Clayton is residential, nice homes, in nice neighborhoods with around 10,900 nice neighbors. Everyone knows everyone else and people still wave as you drive by. In Clayton, everybody is family. There are annual events centered around the park in the center of town such as Concerts, the annual Art and Wine Festival, the 4th of July Parade, Octoberfest, and even a New Years Eve Celebration.
Clayton is a special place, a safe place, a place where people who cherish small-town living and traditional American values live. The schools, public and private, are of high quality, and there are trails for pedestrians, equestrians and bicyclists.
There is a sense of history in Clayton . . . it is simply, a great place to live.
